So, as some of you may already know, I got this Peugeot 3008 to replace my aging thirsty Subaru Tribeca 3.6. After 2 days and couple drives with it, this is what I think about some things. Loads of pictures too.

Kinja'd!!!

Wheels are 19 inch alloys mated to factory Continental ContiSportContacts, it’s a bit firmer than the Tribeca but that’s not necessarily bad, the ride is very comfortable in the traditional French style and it feels nicer to drive.

Kinja'd!!!

Interior quality is overall very good for the price, all the leather is very soft and every piece of plastic is soft to the touch. The details in the dash and steering wheel are made of real metal and not plastic, same with the infotainment buttons.

Kinja'd!!!

The 3008 uses Peugeot’s I-Cockpit system, which means a tiny steering wheel placed under the gauges and a raised gauge panel. The tiny steering wheel is very effortless and makes tight turns and maneuvering unbelievably easy.

Seats are supple but supportive and the massaging seats are very nice if a bit weak for my taste.

Kinja'd!!!

There is a big panoramic sunroof, I like the big panoramic sunroof.

Kinja'd!!!

The is interior is surrounded by real aluminum and a nice piece of fabric that crosses the dash, feels like linen but a bit more elegant, I like it, not a lot of cars have details like that.

Kinja'd!!!

The center armrest has a massive endless void inside it. The gap between the plastic bits looks cheap, but no one is ever going to look inside that.

Kinja'd!!!

The gearbox is this weird move the lever front or backwards and it returns tot the original spot thing, kinda like the BMW Joystick or the Jeep GC Death Lever. Oh, it’s a regular EAT6 speed.

The thing behind the Start button is the induction charging place, might be useful with the next Iphone purchase, but sadly my Iphone 7 is devoid of cable-free charging.

There is keyless entry, which is kinda nice, I never had a car with keyless entry.

Kinja'd!!!

Here things get interesting. All 3008s come with the Virtual Cockpit screen thing, which is customizable and nicely detailed. I looks miles better than VW’s Virtual Cockpit in terms of definition and design.

You can choose from 3 settings, the one above is the one you can customize to your liking: adding and removing information.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the minimalist setting, removing everything but the speed. Nice for night highway driving.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the normal version and the one I use the most. The regular dials. Note that the Tach is backwards, I like that.

Overall the I-Cockpit matched to the Virtual Cockpit works really well after you get used to it, making spirited driving and tight maneuvers much easier in a slightly larger car like this.

Kinja'd!!!

This 2 shitty pictures show how much mood lighting there is inside this thing, even around the panoramic sunroof and cupholders.

Kinja'd!!!

Not sure how I feel about that, kinda tacky but cool?

Kinja'd!!!

Indicators are dynamic and follow the DLRs.

With a FWD layout matched to a BMW-PSA 1.6 Turbo I4 making 165HP this thing doesn’t feel particularly fast and there is quite a bit of turbo-lag from a stand still, but the handling is very well sorted and the ride is very good. The 3.6 AWD Tribeca was much faster, but the 3008 is much better to drive, it just feels nicer and tighter.

Kinja'd!!!

The verdict is that I like it, maybe there were better options on the market and I could have waited for the new Tiguan, but the Peugeot looks miles better and Style over substance has been my motto for years now.

You really wow’d me, until you got to that horsepower figure. Aside from that though, I’m impressed. Very nice.

Boo Tiguan. I am sure it is OK, but I just tend to find VWs offerings well....really boring. I would have the 3008 any day!

Holy crap, I want that car! I’ve never heard of it, but that interior is a new favorite. Let’s see them bring Peugeot to the states, and by then I’ll be ready for it!

But add some horsepower first...

Why, how much power would you expect in a crossover based on a Focus sized car? If it had been bought in France, the popular options are a 130 bhp triple or a 100 bhp diesel four (with options up to 180 bhp) which buyers seem to find adequate.

Well, if the presumably smaller focus st has 350hp, then I’d want at least 300. My FX45 has 320, and I wouldn’t mind another 100hp on tap... Not that I really need it.

My 2000 Civic had 160hp, and it was fun, but it was also much lighter than any crossover.

So I’d want more. Much more.

Still though, very nice car.

In the U.K. and Europe we’re happy with a very reasonable and usable 100-150bhp.

In North America they seem to need more than a 250bhp to get do the 55mph speed limit or not to sit in traffic doing 10mph.

I wanted better fuel economy and more tech anyway. But yeah, 165HP is pretty sluggish.

One question, is the virtual cockpit laggy?

Not at all so far, speedo and tach are accurate as are other functionalities.

Every now and then I look at French cars online (since we can’t get them here in the US), and the horsepower figures are always ridiculous. Everything is near perfect, great design, great ergonomics - I don’t understand why they have to underpower them.

I think it’s a different mentality, the power they make is plentiful to drive on European highways and small country roads, plus they are much lighter than most American cars and fuel is more expensive over there.

What!? The Tucson in this same segment gets a 175 hp turbo four here, the CR-V makes 190, and the RAV4 has 176. I was actually surprised by the power figure here since the 3008's base diesel makes do with 99 hp. Now I like power as much as anyone else with my 325 hp turbo I6, but my 168 hp I5 V50 is fairly reasonable—for the segment, I’d say this Pug is more than on par.
